How I Rate Anime:
10/10 – Masterpiece . Every episode has to keep me completely hooked, and the anime has to do things I didn’t expect. I don’t mind silly or wholesome moments, but not half an episode—unless it’s a slice of life or comedy. For action anime, full episodes of nothing happening just talking (like a number of reincarnated as a slime episodes) are a no-go. Everything has to feel meaningful, exciting, or at least entertaining every episode.
9/10 – Very good and I’d happily rewatch it. Usually it’s not a 10 because it’s short (like 12 episodes) or there are some things that could have been done better.
- The episode count matters because I feel like a short anime can’t always fully deliver the amount of enjoyment I want from it.
8/10 – Solid anime. It grabbed my interest in multiple parts and left a good impression. I’d probably rewatch it if I’m bored or in the mood for something lighter. Not perfect, but definitely worth watching.
7/10 – Good, but could be much better. Some elements feel generic—plot armour, predictable moments, or overused tropes—but overall it’s still watchable. I can sit through the whole thing without losing interest, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
6/10 – Not very interesting. It usually has a lot of generic anime tropes: plot armour, standard character designs, and characters that don’t stand out. I probably won’t rewatch it, and I’ll only finish it if it’s short (12 episodes or fewer) and not actively frustrating.
5/10 – I’m honestly questioning why I’ve watched it. It’s either unfunny, full of pointless filler episodes (like beach episodes that don’t go anywhere), or the story is boring—often more than one of these.
- For action or drama anime, this usually means there’s way more talking than actual action. It’s hard to call it an “action” anime if most of the time is spent talking. (Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 is a good example—people joke it’s “I Was Reincarnated Into a Board Meeting.”) Also, fights that are over in one move with enemies dying instantly makes battles pointless to animate.
4/10 – I almost never give this score, but when I do, it’s usually for an anime that completely failed to engage me. Anything lower than this feels like a waste of time and money. There’s nothing interesting, entertaining, or worth following—basically dead content.
The last three ratings… it’s best not to talk about them.
Extra Notes
Music matters a lot.
A soundtrack can completely change how an anime feels. Good music enhances the mood of a scene—battle tracks make fights tense, suspense tracks make mysteries feel real, and calmer tracks make quiet moments relaxing. For example, Strike the Blood and A Certain Magical Index do this well, with music that fits the situation currently happening. On the other hand, some anime use generic or out-of-place music during serious moments, like antagonist appearances, which can make those scenes feel flat or even unintentionally silly.
I’ve been watching anime since 2013, so my standards have changed a lot over time. Anime I rated a 7 years ago might now be a 6 or even a 5 if I rewatched it today. Experience changes when you've watched hundreds of animes and seen repetitive patterns with them that makes them more bland than interesting.
I've only started making notes these past few years on anime I've watched or dropped. I used to just give a rating and move on so I hope they give others a clearer idea of what to expect with them.
Why I Don’t Read Manga
Speech bubbles – I'm used reading left to right and with them being all over the place when multiple characters are on the page, I cannot focus with what to read first to understand what's going on.
Lack of colour – It’s hard to visualise what characters look like when everything is black and white.
Spoilers - I like curiosity and unexpected scenes, If I read a manga and that manga got an anime adaptation , I wouldn't feel much enthusiasm to want to watch the anime due to already knowing what is going to happen because of it's manga.
